FLVS is global… and so are its students! Right now I’m posting this from England, four hours ahead of Florida, and thousands of miles and an ocean away! I can do this because the internet is global, just like FLVS and its clubs. Just personally I've seen students from Japan, Brazil, Guatemala, and Malaysia in live lessons! In clubs, this adds an extra layer of coolness, because we get more time and opportunities to actually get to know each other. We get to learn more about other cultures, foods, beliefs, and more, all through the people we interact with through FLVS. It's a pretty special thing, and even if we do or do not have anyone global in Speech and Debate right now, the principle still applies. It's really nice to have the opportunity to get to know each other as friends and club members, and be a part of not only the FLVS family, but the Speech and Debate family. Wherever you come from, whatever your hobbies are, or how much debate experience you have, we're really excited to have you and we welcome you! Make sure you take the time in between competing and such to interact with your fellow members. :) That's partly why we have things like the Student Spotlight and our 3 Fun Facts Blog Game prize! You never know what great people you could meet through FLVS and through Speech and Debate. Now, as you read in the title of this game, we're doing a fun little twist tonight! Instead of trivia and questions about the introduction like usual, we're doing some global fun facts that you'll need to research or know the answers to! It shouldn't be too hard, but you'll need to be ready to explore and to get to know the world just a little bit better. On your marks, get set, GO!!! Here's how it's going to work: Below this introduction I'm going to post some special questions and activities for you to work on. After you've read the challenges you'll have to post your answers in the comments. Submissions will end at 6pm (so no posts after that will count) and the first person to get all of them right will get to have three fun facts shared about them at the next meeting and on the blog, and they will get an extra vote to say who won our next debate. All players will be mentioned at the meeting! Finally, if you've skipped the introduction I suggest reading it because there will be a few questions about it on the quiz! Good luck debaters, and havvvveeee fun! On your marks, get set, go! TEXT VERSION OF QUESTIONS:
1. What country has a Prime Minister named Justin Trudeau? 2. FLVS is currently in all 50 states and over how many countries? 3. Which country am I currently posting from? 4. How many miles is it from this country’s capital city (hint, it begins with an L) to Florida’s capital city of Orlando? 5. How do you say “airplane” and “airport” in Spanish (note: it’s ok if you do not use accent marks)? 6. Which country are wasp crackers from? 7. What season is it in Australia right now? 8. Fill in the blank: The name of an extremely popular kid’s educational computer game was “Where in the _____ is Carmen Sandiego?” 9. How many countries are there in Africa? 10. BE PREPARED! Recently, I re-watched a really funny (in my opinion) 2005 animated movie called Hoodwinked!. It stars Anne Hathaway as a modern version of Little Red Riding Hood, and features some really random but well-done songs and scenes. One of the songs is "Be Prepared" and is sung by not Red, but..... a mountain goat named Japeth. Japeth sings these lines in the song: "And when you're on the mountain, you got no Guarantees. That life will turn up roses or turn out as you Please. When you're on the mountains, there's lots to be A'feared. That's why this here old mountain goat's prepared Be prepared, be prepared, This lesson must be shared, This lesson must be shared, Be prepared! Be prepared, be prepared And unless you got a spare, You got one life, so handle it with care" Although the stuff about being a mountain goat may not be quite so applicable to us, the lesson about being prepared absolutely is! Being well prepared and planning ahead is not just a good general life lesson, but one that is really important for Speech and Debate. Before meetings, if you know the topic, do some research! It'll help you no matter what side you're on. Even if you don't get the side you want you can use the facts you find for your side and to help you know what counterargument to make against the other team! Research also helps you to simply feel better . If you have no clue what's going on or what anyone is talking about, you'll most likely feel like a deer in the headlights when you go to speak, instead of feeling confident, knowledgeable, composed, and of course, prepared. And being prepared doesn't just apply to doing research! Even if you don't know the topic beforehand or if you're in scheduled planning time in the meeting, take as much time as you can to write what you'd like to say in the way you want to say it. Having facts and statistics handy is wonderful, but if you get stuck on how to introduce it or you freeze and run out of time, all your great work could potentially fall a little flat. To sum it up: give yourself yourself your best shot at success by being prepared as much as you can! :) The effort it takes can save you a lot of annoyance later and you'll feel more comfortable and ready to go in debates. Now I hope you're prepared to answer some questions, because the trivia starts NOW! Here's how it's going to work: Below this introduction I'm going to post some special questions and activities for you to work on.
