When debating, it's so important to really get into it! You can't argue your points, do the right research, or bring your team to victory if your heart is just not in it. You won't feel confident, your teammates will lack some support, and the audience will definitely notice. Plus, as a club, we want everyone to feel like they can get involved and go for it, and we want you to be passionate and having fun. That said... it's also right not to get TOO into it. It's important at all times to remain friendly and encouraging. Sure, you don't have to agree with the opposite side or want them to win, and it's totally awesome to go all in in rebuttals or with questions in the chat box, but there's definitely a line that can be crossed. Even if you don't say something hurtful, trash talk can throw someone off or make them feel pressured. Powerful debating is awesome, negative fighting (even unintentionally) - not so much. That's why with the Speech and Debate club we always foster an atmosphere of fun and togetherness. We can discuss the tough issues and fight for what we believe, but at the end of the day we're all still friends and we're all really excited for each other to just give it a shot. Sometimes, in the heat of the moment, it can be hard to remember where that balance comes from. The answer is: you guys! When you wish each other luck or make the effort not to sound too pointed in your rebuttals, you keep that awesome group momentum going. When you congratulate each other for doing well or tell someone you didn't even notice their nerves, you participate in what makes this club really special. :) And once again, it's time to take part in some of that competitive-but-fun spirit and answer some questions in the comments below! After reading this extra source material, that is. ;) NOW GO FOR IT!!!! "Competition has been shown to be useful up to a certain point and no further, but cooperation, which is the thing we must strive for today, begins where competition leaves off." - Franklin D. Roosevelt "TEAMWORK MAKES THE DREAM WORK!" Here's how it's going to work: Below this introduction I'm going to post some special questions and activities for you to work on. After you've read the challenges you'll have to post your answers in the comments. Submissions will end at 10pm (so no posts after that will count) and the first person to get all of them right will get to have three fun facts shared about them at the next meeting and on the blog, and they will get an extra vote to say who won our next debate. All players will be mentioned at the meeting! Finally, if you've skipped the introduction I suggest reading it because there will be a few questions about it on the quiz! Good luck debaters, and havvvveeee fun! On your marks, get set, go! Text Version of Questions:
